rampagebattleman Having been a fan of this artist for some time now I feel like I've been taken on a journey exploring the very fringes of musical form textures and tones. I found this to be his most cohesive and fully formed sounding release without losing the raw highbrow underground minimalist vibe that is seemingly impossible to fake. All in all an exciting new release from a very promising up and coming artist.
P.s. Also the video for Automata by Loui Binns is very good, I'd love to see more in the future Favorite track: Automata.

‘Diatom' EP – Rhombus Index (SBA #031)

The second release of 2022 on See Blue Audio, and the thirty-first since the label’s inception, sees the return of Rhombus Index with the ‘Diatom’ EP. Back in July 2021, the ‘Planar’ EP heralded the approach of summer and the restorative power of nature, and the vital role electronic music can play in recovering our equilibrium. Now we have ‘Diatom’ where similar themes are embraced and extended, and a particular emphasis is placed on the exploration of small worlds through sound.

Rhombus Index represents the work of an ambient, soundscape and experimental electronic musician based in Halifax, West Yorkshire. As with its predecessor, the 'Diatom' EP reveals the diverse array of influences that act upon its creator: the natural world and field recordings, ambient music with a Balearic sensibility, algorithms and data manipulation, video games, warehouse and rave culture, and the minimal and the melodic. Over four relatively short tracks, all these have been distilled to perfection creating something of subtle beauty and invigorating emotional energy. Both EPs also share the same attention to detail with each sound being exactly where it should be.

The main studio technique used in the creation of these tracks was generative composition based on a mixture of field recordings taken from warehouses parties, algorithmic sequencers, and granular and wavetable synthesis. Added to this was an audio palette representing the concept of exploring small worlds through sound, and perhaps these sounds represent those the creatures who inhabit these worlds would make or interact with given an electronic soundtrack. The title refers to diatoms, a unicellular species of microalgae found in water and an essential component of the Earth’s ecosystem.

‘Spinor’ opens this new collection and continues the atmospheres generated on the ‘Planar’ EP. It elegantly sets the scene for what’s to come with its gentle waves of beatless tones, and the inspiration for this track stems from the miniature worlds of sea creatures interacting with each other at evening time.

‘Automata’ follows and serves as the beating heart of the EP with its sublime hypnotic energy. It’s here where the technique of generative composition is most encapsulated, and there’s a wonderful lightness of touch to the fluctuations in tempo and broken beat-style rhythms, which also finds visual expression in the accompanying video.

On ‘Bee Brew Run’ we return to the otherworldly, psychedelic side of Rhombus Index, which was also a key ingredient in ‘Leptosol’ from the ‘Planar’ EP. This is a trippy sunset of a track, part Balearic but also taking inspiration from video game soundtracks of the PlayStation PS1/PS2 eras.

All of which leads up to ‘Axiom’ which closes the ‘Diatom’ EP in dramatic style. With its joyous Balearic attitude, ‘Axiom’ is based on the idea of combining warehouse party vibes and rave euphoria with ambient sensibilities. There’s an intentional evolution in the track that suggests a drop into a drum beat but which never occurs.

On this note, we are left rejuvenated, while also in anticipation of more to come; the sun rising, a new day dawning, and those small worlds joined in harmony with the universe through music. Let Rhombus Index take you there.
